- Dining
There is much to see and do beyond Arawa. Bougainville has an abundance of natural beauty from sandy beaches and secluded islands to thick jungle and volcanoes. The island has amazing traditional cultures exhibited through diverse dress, dance, foods and handicrafts, including wonderful woven baskets.
Bougainville was occupied by Japanese forces during World War II, and many relics from that era remain.
From Arawa, you can visit the abandoned Panguna mine and township, the townships of Buin and Siwai.
Upon request, a local tour guide and 4WD vehicle can be arranged.

Transport Options
Arawa is the capital of the Central Bougainville District of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, Papua New Guinea. It is located on the eastern coast of the island of Bougainville, next to the Pacific Ocean.
Itakaka House is located at Section 9, Lot 106, Arawa.
Air
Kieta (Aropa) Airport is 30 minutes by road from Arawa.
Update
As at September 2025 Air Niugini flights are suspended, while Airlines PNG services continue. A project is under way to upgrade and modernise Aropa Airport, including repair, strengthening and resurfacing of the pavement, construction of a new terminal and upgrade to essential services for the airport. The project is due for completion in 2027.
Road
Travel by road in Bougainville is challenging. Most roads are gravel and in poor condition, although there is an extensive improvement program under way. A road extends from Kokopau in the north (across the Buka Passage from Buka town), to Arawa and beyond to Buin in the south. PMVs travel this route, and 4WD vehicles are available for hire, usually with a driver included.
Sea
Loloho Wharf is located to the north of Arawa, and the Port of Kieta is located to the east, however there are no scheduled passenger services to either.
